Giveaway: First Daughter & Last Snow

Surprise! (As if you hadn’t guessed already…)

I’m very pleased to announce my very first giveaway, made possible by the lovely people over at Tor/Forge. I’m giving away both of Eric Van Lustbader’s Jack McClure novels, First Daughter and Last Snow, to one winner! Booking Through Thursday: Break

Do you take breaks while reading a book? Or read it straight through? (And, by breaks, I don’t mean sleeping, eating and going to work; I mean putting it aside for a time while you read something else.)

I initially thought this was such an utterly foreign concept to me, but I realize I’ve been doing it during The Lord of the Rings readalong. I’m trying to tear my way through Last Snow so that I can finish The Two Towers in peace.

I also tend to do this with reading for school, especially plays–I read Waiting for Godot yesterday in the warm sunshine. (It’s better than I remembered, but there’s still this mean and cynical undercurrent that makes me want to reread Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead just to wash the taste out.) However, if I’m not taking a month to read a book, this is usually the only kind of break I take–for school.

Teaser Tuesday: Last Snow

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

He was here on presidential business, he had a charter flight waiting to take him to Ukraine at Carson’s request. It seemed the height of madness to be striding across Red Square in the dead of night toward an ambush between two Russian mafia hit men and an FSB agent.

The Sunday Salon: Project Gutenberg

This past week, I started two proofreading gigs–one at my school newspaper and one at Distributed Proofreaders. Distributed Proofreaders is a website where registered volunteers help convert books in the public domain into e-books by proofreading the digitized text. There’s several rounds of proofreading and formatting, and at the end of it all, the book is added to Project Gutenberg.

Where had he been when she had been pushed out from between her mother’s legs? Making sure a shipment of XM 8 lightweight assault rifles, stolen from Fort McNair, didn’t fall into the hands of the Colombian drug-runners who very badly needed them.
