The Sunday Salon: Fun With Search Terms Strikes Back

I love seeing what search terms bring people to my blog—the logical, the weird, and the utterly nonsensical. I also love dispensing advice when nobody asks me for it. The combination of the two results in Fun with Search Terms, and considering that I am probably in line for something at this very instant at Dragon*Con, I thought I’d leave the blog’s engine running with another edition of Fun with Search Terms.

is fanfiction only for young people?

A common misconception, born out of the utterly stupid idea that fanfiction is practice for “real” fiction. While fanfiction is a fairly accepted practice among the young ones, fanfiction has been written by people of all ages (and even by people who wouldn’t call their stuff fanfiction!); I direct you to Aja Romano’s post on the subject for a good list.

why does jim dale change bellatrix’s voice

So I would love her. Dale ended up casting the Black sisters as French, despite the fact that Bellatrix just marries a Frenchman, undoubtedly to further differentiate the cast, but it ended up endearing her to me, especially after Helena Bonham Carter’s job with the role in the films.

for the love of batman jump

I don’t have an answer for this, I just think it’s really poetic.

is discovery of witches for men?

It’s a novel, not a pre-natal vitamin. Of course. (If you are a masculine-identified chappie who enjoys terrible novels, that is.)

did sally ride have any influence on the movie the little mermaid

Yes, she did! Animator Glen Keane used footage of her in zero gravity as reference for Ariel’s hair underwater.

city of bones harry potter fanfiction

Yes, yes it is. (Ugh, do y’all know that there’s going to be a film adaptation and Robert Sheenan is in it, so I have to go see it? Uggggggh.)

short notes of omnivores

Do laundry. Buy cupcake. Work meeting. There you go.

is a visit from the goon squad a novel or short story

Egan calls it a novel, but chapters of it have been published as short stories prior to the novel’s publication. Personally, I think it’s an anthology in disguise.

would u be able to get me ‘wide sargasso sea’ its a series?

I am not a library and the book isn’t in the public domain, nor is Wide Sargasso Sea a series. Rhys kind of makes her point with just the one book.

I’m at Dragon*Con! Details to follow.

The Baen Free Library is full of free downloads, including The Shadow of the Lion and On Basilisk Station. Night Shade Books is offering Butcher Bird and Grey as free downloads at the moment. Vertigo Comics is offering free downloads of the first issue of several series, including Fables, The Unwritten, and Y: The Last Man. (And you will go download The Unwritten.) Small Beer Press offers several of their books as free downloads, including Kelly Link’s Magic for Beginners. If I’ve missed your giveaway or freebie, drop me a line!
