Booking Through Thursday: Cereal

If you’re like me, you grew up reading everything under the sun, like the cereal boxes while you ate your breakfast, the newspapers held by strangers on the subway, the tabloid headlines at the grocery store.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever read? (You know, something NOT a book, magazine, short story, poem or article.)

Hmm… probably manuals and the backs of bathroom products, which, if I’m remembering J. K. Rowling, a Biography correctly, I have in common with the author. I used Herbal Essence as a kid (before they discontinued my shampoo, the jerks) and they used to put little riddles on the back of their bottles. I wonder who ends up writing those things?

  1. Oh, YES! H.E. has GREAT stuff! And the bottles will always remind me of being in the hospital right after my son was born because my husband went down to the maternity wing gift shop to get shampoo for me and he got these little tiny bottles of Herbal for me. I distinctly remember the lables!

  2. Innocent (who make juice and smoothies) always put quite quirky stuff on their cartons – it whiles away a couple of minutes while eating breakfast!

The weirdest is probably Procter and Gamble, who used to put various interesting facts about menstruation on their sanitary towel packaging – though they don’t seem to any more, probably so that they don’t have to change the packaging across the world.

  3. I’m using a shampoo that has riddles on the bottle! I wonder if it’s Herbal Essence? I may continue to buy it just because it provides interesting reading. 🙂

  4. I used to love reading catalogue copy. My mother always said she’d be brilliant at writing the copy for clothing catalogues, and we used to read them out loud to each other over meals. :p
