Booking Through Thursday: Foreign

Name a book (or books) from a country other than your own that you love. Or aren’t there any?

When it comes to foreign books, I read and enjoy a lot of British literature; Jane Austen, Harry Potter, Brideshead Revisited. I’m a pretty poor Frenchwoman most of the time, but I love and adore Alexandre Dumas, especially The Count of Monte Cristo. However, beyond Europe, I don’t read too much in translation, which is something I’m trying to fix.

  1. My first language is Swedish but I’ve been reading in English for forty years, so I had to make this question more challenging for myself by excluding English/American writers as well as Swedish. If you like, read my answer here.

  2. I like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami, Pablo Neruda (if you dig poetry), and others I can’t recall right now. I really like Indian literature, too, although I suspect that the influence of British imperialism on contemporary Indian literature makes it a good transition point for foreign literature.
